Career Readiness Fellowship Project
The Career Readiness Fellowship Program, organised by the Health Intel Trust, is an 8-week virtual initiative designed to equip young Africans with essential skills at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and innovation. The program aims to nurture a new generation of professionals capable of driving sustainable change within the public health sector.
The fellowship commenced with a structured onboarding process, including a welcome orientation that introduced participants to the program’s vision, expectations, and opportunities for growth. Participants, drawn from diverse backgrounds across Africa, were engaged in a blended learning experience combining training, mentorship, and practical project implementation.
The program was executed in two major phases. The first phase, spanning four weeks, focused on capacity building and foundational skills. Fellows received training in key areas such as storytelling, digital tools, content creation, professional communication, networking, and design thinking. Practical assignments and reflective exercises were incorporated to reinforce learning and ensure real-world applicability.
The second phase emphasised mentorship and capstone project development. Participants were paired with experienced mentors who guided them in refining career pathways and executing innovation-driven or career-focused projects. This phase enabled fellows to apply acquired knowledge in practical contexts while receiving expert feedback.
Program delivery was conducted virtually via structured weekend sessions held twice weekly, supported by continuous assessments and biweekly engagements. The curriculum was designed to promote both technical competence and soft skills, including collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.
A total number of 24 fellows submitted their capstone projects and then the top 7 projects were selected after review by three independent judges to present their project on the closing ceremony day. At the end, the top three capstone projects were;
CardioSense(Winner): An Arduino Nano-based ECG monitoring system that records the electrical activity of the heart. Its design emphasizes affordability, portability, and ease of use, making it an ideal choice for low-resource settings.
CareCircleNg(First Runner Up): A digital home care platform that connects Nigerian families at home and abroad to verified nurses for in-home elderly care.
VaxiTrack(Public’s Favorite): A smart vaccination reminder and reward system tailored for Nigerian mothers and caregivers.
Key outcomes of the fellowship included improved career readiness, enhanced digital and technical proficiency, strengthened professional networks, and increased confidence among participants to pursue opportunities within the healthcare and technology sectors. The program also fostered a collaborative community of young professionals committed to innovation and impact across Africa.
Overall, the Career Readiness Fellowship Program achieved its objective of preparing participants for workforce effectiveness and leadership in health-tech spaces. Its combination of training, mentorship, and hands-on experience proves its promising value as a scalable model for youth empowerment and capacity development on the continent.
